The journey of the king crabs

Crab hotel enables international transport

King crabs, which can weigh up to 10 kilos per animal, are caught in Finmark and then loaded onto a truck in Bugøynes. An approximately 1800-kilometre drive in 30 hours from the north of Norway through Sweden to Oslo. The transport company Leif Skjønhaug AS converted a MAN TGX for this purpose. The truck has a special cooling system, a so-called carrier unit. The special thing about this transport is that the drivers - who are normally allowed to sit behind the wheel for a maximum of 9 hours per day - have to change three times during the 30-hour journey. Because no time must be lost to bring the living freight quickly to their shrimp hotel in Oslo. The fishing areas are very far away from Oslo and can only be reached by plane to a limited extent. Therefore, the crab hotel offers them a short shelter until their plane charters for example to Singapore, Dubai or Los Angeles. More than 20 tons of crabs can be accommodated in crystal clear water in the crab hotel. In this way, king crabs can be sent all over the world all year round.
