Research

The RERoad (Research and Education on Road Transport Logistics) competence centre is part of the RETrans platform, which has been created as a cooperative project of University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna, the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, the SCHIG mbH and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit).

The University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna pursues several research interests in the bachelor’s and master’s degree study programmes Logistics and Transport Management:

  • E-Commerce & City Logistics: research in the study programmes focuses particularly on urban areas, which are characterised by specific spatial, traffic, economic, ecological and social challenges. Special attention is paid to the requirements and development potential of the City of Vienna as a logistics location.
  • Logistics Trends & Innovations: analyses of new trends, current and future solutions in logistics, supply chain management, transport and traffic. Topics range from new technologies, such as electromobility, to new business and cooperation models, to revolutionary approaches such as Industry 4.0.
  • Sustainable Logistics: research is dedicated to approaches to sustainable action in logistics, including environmentally friendly modes of transport, training and further education of employees, humanisation of working environments and diversity in logistics.
  • New Silk Road: The potential and challenges of the "New Silk Road", especially for Austria and the Vienna metropolitan region.

Some projects in our research areas:

  • “Community Hub": solutions for micro-logistics hubs that provide the urban population with the best possible logistical services while ensuring equal access for all stakeholders.
  • “Logistics concierge”: Creation of an economically sustainable concept for the operation of so-called micro-hubs by supplementing existing CEP services with innovative logistics services.
  • "inned": Integration of new technologies and (high-performance) infrastructures into the existing transport network regarding possible network design and potential effects on metropolitan areas.
  • “Q4“: This project investigates the contribution of quattro-modal transport hub to an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable freight transport system.
  • “Smart Hubs 2.0”: analyses the potential of multimodal hubs with regard to an overall traffic system logic and development of a benchmark system.
  • “Optihubs": Development of systematic processes to increase freight traffic with special regard to the Danube waterway.
  • “Benchmark Transsped”: Basic analysis to create an online platform for the utilization of business and (utility) vehicle generated data.
